WOMAN IS THE NIGGER OF THE WORLD. ( 1972 )
(Co-written with Yoko Ono)
Woman is the nigger of the world Yes she is, think about it Woman is the nigger of the world Think about it, do something about it
We make her paint her face and dance If she won't be a slave we say that she don't love us If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man While putting her down we pretend that she's above us
Woman is the nigger of the world Yes, she is, if you don't believe me take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave of the slaves Ah yeah, better scream about it
We make her bear and raise our children And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen We tell her home is the only place she should be Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend
Woman is the nigger of the world Yes, she is, if you don't believe me take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave to the slaves Yeah, alright
We insult her every day on TV And wonder why she has no guts or confidence When she's young we kill her will to be free While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb
Oh well, woman is the nigger of the world Yes, she is, if you don't believe me take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave to the slaves Yes, she is, if you believe me, you better scream about it
We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance
This is what John said about the song:
Well anyway, I took the title and wrote the song "Woman Is The Nigger Of The World" which I believe was long before Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman". So it was the first Women's Liberation song as well, as far as I'm concerned, and it was directly quoted from Yoko but with her singing it probably would have not got on the air. It was talked about. It got the message across. The whole story is the title, the lyrics are just a fill-in. I felt the lyrics didn't live up to Yoko's title.

This is what John said about the song:
I sort of cheated. The word 'masturbation' was in it but I wrote in the lyric sheet, because I'd had enough of the bannings of all ... every bloody record I put out was banned for some reason or another. Even " Walrus " was banned on the BBC at one time, because it said 'knickers'. So I mean I'd been banned so many times all over, that I copped out and wrote 'mastication'. It was more important to get the song out than to be bothered by a word, 'masturbation'.
(John Lennon, 1980)

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. ( 1968 )
Words are flying out like endless rain into a paper cup They slither while they pass They slip away across the universe Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting thorough my open mind Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru deva om Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes That call me on and on across the universe Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe
Jai guru deva om Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world
Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing through my open ears exciting and inviting me Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns It calls me on and on across the universe
Jai guru deva om Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Nothing's gonna change my world Jai guru deva Jai guru deva

GROW OLD WITH ME. (1980 )
Grow old along with me the best is yet to be when our time has come we will be as one god bless our love god bless our love.
Grow old along with me two branches of one tree face the setting sun when the day is done god bless our love god bless our love.
spending our lives together man and wife together world without end world without end.
Grow old along with me whatever fate decrees we will see it through for our love is true god bless our love god bless our love.
For John, [this song] was one that would be a standard, the kind that they would play in church every time a couple gets married. It was horns-and-symphony time... The version that was left to us was John's last recording. The one John and I recorded together in our bedroom with a piano and a rhythm box.
(Yoko Ono)

WORKING CLASS HERO. ( 1970 )
As soon as you’re born they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be.
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool Till you’re so f**kin’ crazy you can’t follow their rules A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be.
When they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can’t really function you’re so full of fear A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be.
Keep you doped with religion and sex and tv And you think you’re so clever and classless and free But you’re still f**kin’ peasants as far as I can see A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be.
There’s room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be.
If you want to be a hero well just follow me If you want to be a hero well just… follow me.

NOBODY LOVES YOU WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND OUT. ( 1974 )
Nobody loves you when you're down and out Nobody sees you when you're on cloud nine Everybody's hustlin' for a buck and a dime I'll scratch your back and you scratch mine
I've been across to the other side I've shown you everything, I got nothing to hide And still you ask me do I love you, what it is, what it is All I can tell you is it's all show biz All I can tell you is it's all show biz
Nobody loves you when you're down and out Nobody knows you when you're on cloud nine Everybody's hustlin' for a buck and a dime I'll scratch your back and you knife mine
I've been across the water now so many times I've seen the one eyed witchdoctor leading the blind And still you ask me do I love you, what you say, what you say Everytime I put my finger on it, it slips away Everytime I put my finger on it, it slips away
Well I get up in the morning and I'm looking in the mirror to see, ooo wee! Then I'm lying in the darkness and I know I can't get to sleep, ooo wee!
Nobody loves you when you're old and grey Nobody needs you when you're upside down Everybody's hollerin' 'bout their own birthday Everybody loves you when you're six foot in the ground

MIND GAMES. ( 1973 )
We're playing those mind games together Pushing the barriers, planting seeds Playing the mind guerrilla Chanting the mantra, peace on earth We all been playing those mind games forever Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil Doing the mind guerrilla Some call it magic, the search for the grail
Love is the answer and you know that for sure Love is a flower, you got to let it, you got to let it grow
So keep on playing those mind games together Faith in the future, outta the now You just can't beat on those mind guerrillas Absolute elsewhere in the stones of your mind Yeah we're playing those mind games forever Projecting our images in space and in time
Yes is the answer and you know that for sure Yes is surrender, you got to let it, you got to let it go
So keep on playing those mind games together Doing the ritual dance in the sun Millions of mind guerrillas Putting their soul power to the karmic wheel Keep on playing those mind games forever Raising the spirit of peace and love
Love... (I want you to make love, not war, I know you've heard it before)

BRING ON THE LUCIE ( FREDA PEEPLE). (1973 )
(Alright Boys, this is it, over the hill)
We don't care what flag you're waving We don't even want to know your name We don't care where you're from or where you're going All we know is that you came
You're making all our decisions We have just one request of you That while you're thinking things over Here's something you just better do
Free the people now do it do it do it do it do it now, Free the people now do it do it do it do it do it now.
Well we were caught with our hands in the air Don't despair paranoia's everywhere We can shake it with love when we're scared So let's shout it aloud like a prayer
Free the people now do it do it do it do it do it now, Free the people now do it do it do it do it do it now
We understand your paranoia But we don't want to play your game You think you're cool and know what you are doing 666 is your name
So while you're jerking off each other You better bear this thought in mind Your time is up you better know it But maybe you don't read the signs
Free the people now do it do it do it do it do it now, Free the people now do it do it do it do it do it now
Well you were caught with your hands in the kill And you still got to swallow your pill As you slip and you slide down the hill On the blood of the people you killed
Stop the killing now do it do it do it do it do it now
bring on the lucie.

BEAUTIFUL BOY ( DARLING BOY ). ( 1980 )
Close your eyes Have no fear The monster's gone He's on the run and your daddy's here
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy
Before you go to sleep Say a little prayer Every day in every way It's getting better and better
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy
Out on the ocean sailing away I can hardly wait To see you come of age But I guess we'll both just have to be patient 'Cause it's a long way to go A hard row to hoe Yes it's a long way to go But in the meantime
Before you cross the street Take my hand Life is what happens to you While you're busy making other plans
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy
Before you go to sleep Say a little prayer Every day in every way It's getting better and better
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy Darling, darling, darling Darling Sean
('Goodnight Sean, see you in the morning, bright and early')
This is what John said about the song:
I was with Sean in the kitchen with the bread. I kept thinking: 'Well, I ought to be inspired to write about Sean'. I was going through a bit of that and when I finally gave up on thinking about writing a song about him, of course, the song came to me.

WATCHING THE WHEELS. ( 1980 )
People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin When I say that I'm o.k. well they look at me kind of strange Surely you're not happy now you no longer play the game
People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round I really love to watch them roll No longer riding on the merry-go-round I just had to let it go
Ah, people asking questions lost in confusion Well I tell them there's no problem, only solutions Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind I tell them there's no hurry I'm just sitting here doing time
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round I really love to watch them roll No longer riding on the merry-go-round I just had to let it go I just had to let it go I just had to let it go

WOMAN. ( 1980 )
(For the other half of the sky)
Woman I can hardly express My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness After all I'm forever in your debt And woman I will try to express My inner feelings and thankfulness For showing me the meaning of success
Ooh, well, well Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Ooh, well, well Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Woman I know you understand The little child inside of the man Please remember my life is in your hands And woman hold me close to your heart However distant don't keep us apart After all it is written in the stars
Ooh, well, well Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Ooh, well, well Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Well
Woman please let me explain I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain So let me tell you again and again and again
I love you, yeah, yeah Now and forever I love you, yeah, yeah Now and forever I love you, yeah, yeah Now and forever I love you, yeah, yeah

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH. ( 1972 )
(Co-written with Yoko Ono)
If you had the luck of the Irish You’d be sorry and wish you were dead You should have the luck of the Irish And you’d wish you was English instead.
A thousand years of torture and hunger Drove the people away from their land A land full of beauty and wonder Was raped by the British brigands! Goddamn! Goddamn!
If you could keep voices like flowers There’d be shamrock all over the world If you could drink dreams like Irish streams Then the world would be high as the mountain of morn.
In the ‘pool they told us the story How the English divided the land Of the pain the death and the glory And the poets of auld Eireland.
If we could make chains with the morning dew The world would be like Galway Bay Let’s walk over rainbows like leprechauns The world would be one big blarney stone.
Why the hell are the English there anyway As they kill with God on their side Blame it all on the kids and the IRA As the bastards committ genocide! Aye aye! Genocide!
If you had the luck of the irish You’d be sorry and wish you were dead You should have the luck of the Irish And you'd wish you were English instead
Yes you’d wish you were English instead.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS. ( 1967 )
Picture yourself in a boat on a river, With tangerine trees and marmalade skies Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, Towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, And she's gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Ah
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain Where rocking horse people eat marshmellow pies, Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers, That grow so incredibly high. Newpaper taxis appear on the shore, Waiting to take you away. Climb in the back with your head in the clouds, And you're gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Ah
Picture yourself on a train in a station, With plasticine porters with looking glass ties, Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle, The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Ah Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Ah Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds

IMAGINE. (1971, Live at the Apollo)
'Some of you, er, wonder what I'm doing here with no drummers and no nothing like that. Well, you might know I lost my old band, or I left it. I'm putting, er, I'm putting an electric band together, it's not ready yet. Things like this keep coming up, so I just have to busk it. So I'm gonna sing you a song now you might know. It's called "Imagine".'
Two, three, four
Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky
Imagine all the people Living for today, ah
Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too
Imagine all the people Living life in peace
You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions ('try') I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people Sharing all the world
You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one
('Thank you')
This is what John said about the song:
"Imagine" was a sincere statement. It was "Working Class Hero" with chocolate on. I was trying to think of it in terms of children.
