International Beatle Week 2005
From Cavern City Tours:
WEDNESDAY
24 AUG
What is Beatle Week? It’s very hard to describe unless you have actually experienced it, but in a nut shell it is the biggest celebration of the music of the Beatles anywhere in the world, and fittingly it is hosted in the City where it all began – LIVERPOOL. Seven days and nights of madness and mayhem during EVERY waking hour. Organised by Cavern City Tours (Regional Tour Operator of the Year on six occasions). It features over two hundred bands from twenty countries and attended by fans from over forty countries. Truly an International Festival combining live music, exhibitions, guests, a convention, flea market, video shows, tours, plays etc., etc. If you are a Beatle fan then this is for you. If you are a general music fan then this is also for you, as the weekend features bands covering other icons, such as Elvis, The Who, The Stones, Queen etc. It also highlights newer, more contemporary music throughout the Mathew Street Festival area on the Monday. The whole weekend kicks off in style at the Cavern Pub on Wednesday and who better to host it than our very own Mersey Beatles, the resident band at The Cavern in Liverpool. A great start to a great week!
THURSDAY
25 AUG
The music continues throughout the day and night at the Cavern Pub and of course on the two stages at the Cavern Club across the road, However the highlight of the day will be Rutlemania at the Comedy Club, a night hosted by ex- Rutles Neil Innes and John Halsley AKA Ron Nasty and Barry Wom in the spoof Beatles comedy classic ‘The Rutles’. Having Neil participate in Beatle Week is always an honour and a hoot. Sure to be a highlight!.
FRIDAY
26 AUG
The live music continues at the Cavern Club and Pub, but most fans will flock to the Comedy Club again in the afternoon to see the ‘No More Landmines Macca Tribute Concert’. We are keen to highlight one of the causes closest to Paul and Heather’s hearts, that of the danger of land mines. The live music will be provided by Bob Bartey, Wingspan and Lawrence Gilmour and Itchycoo Park, an absolute 100% guarantee of world-class entertainment. As soon as that gig ends it will be a mad dash for the Royal Court Theatre to see the Re- Enactment Concert Series. This idea evolved after one of the directors of CCT saw the Beatels in Adelaide who recreated the Beatles famous 1964 concert with archive film footage of the Press Conferences, and fans reminiscences of the gig. It proved a great backdrop for the band to then recreate that exact Concert. To this end the Australian Beatels will travel half-way around the world to share with us that special show. An LA band – The Fab Four, will recreate the 1965 Hollywood Bowl Concert and a Japanese band the Parrots will do likewise with the 1966 Tokyo Budokan Show. Nostalgia indeed! Then, it will be on to the Adelphi Hotel for ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ a party with more live music in each of the Hotel’s three bars till the wee small hours. It may be the end of day three, but by now you really will be mixing the days up, as each day seamlessly blends in with the next! ‘Tomorrow Never Knows – Indeed!’
SATURDAY
27 AUG
For those of you who can get out of bed early enough, the annual Beatles auction (organised by The Beatles Shop) takes place from 9.30am onwards at LIPA (Paul and George’s old school). For more information on this please ring 0151 236 8066. The action will be in full swing from early till late at The Cavern Pub and The Cavern Club, featuring music from over forty bands in a day. The focus of attention on Saturday afternoon will be on Strawberry Field, where we will be staging a Summer fair, in aid of the Children’s Home which John made so famous with his song. The Garden Party will of course also feature a live music stage and buses will transport fans to Strawberry Field from the City centre. There has been a huge clamour for us to hold another fund-raiser for Strawberry Fields as it has been a highlight of the week on previous occasions. A real treat! Then it’s on to the Royal Court for the evening show and what better way to spend Saturday night during Beatle Week than listening to what has to be the World’s Greatest Ever Beatle Tribute Band – The Fab Faux . From NYC, they do not try to look like the Beatles but nobody and I mean nobody plays Beatles music like this band. They play it as the Beatles would if they were still gigging, Their musicianship is unparalleled – and so it should be with a star-studded line-up that includes Grammy award winning musicians and members of the David Letterman Band and Conan O’Brien Band, A life-changing experience ~ I assure you. This year is the first time in twenty years that we have given a band two headlining shows during Beatle Week. The first of these is tonight’s Ex-Factor Show, which will showcase the Fab Faux performing the music of all four solo ex-Beatles. This will be the world premiere performance of this show. As if that isn’t enough, then it’s off again to the Adelphi Hotel for ‘A Hard Day’s Night"’ and yes – it will be! Another fifteen bands will perform in the Adelphi bars until it’s time to get some sleep if you are lucky!!!
SUNDAY
28 AUG
Sunday is traditionally Convention Day and this year is no exception. The Convention will be extended through to 3am in the morning – so it’s just one humungous event that goes on for fifteen hours. However we will be lucky to get it all in – over fifty bands in one day, exhibitions, a play, quizzes, competitions, flea market, video shows, guest speakers and surprises galore. The Convention Day is absolutely jam packed and there is something for everybody. With over fifty bands in one day, entertaining on four stages, it is impossible to actually do everything in the 15 hours that the Convention is open. Throughout the morning there are also tours of the famous and not so famous sites. The flea market is the ideal place to find that rare record or elusive memorabilia. There are always dozens of Beatles people present – those that were actually part of the story, whether it be Allan Williams; The Beatles’ first manager, Julia; John’s sister, Beatle promoter Sam Leach and many many more. The list of great speakers does not get published until late July, but with the emphasis upon ‘Lennon Remembered’ you can guarantee that there will be lots of surprises and special guests. Bring your autograph book – you’ll need it!
MONDAY
29 AUG
Monday is THE big one. This year’s Mathew Street Festival will begin at 12 noon. Over 300,000 fans will be entertained by over 200 bands in the city centre. Every bar, pub, restaurant and club will echo to the sound of Merseybeat! Over 80 indoor stages are supplemented by six huge outdoor stages in the city centre – and this free festival will continue until 8pm. The Mathew Street Festival is every Liverpudlian’s favourite day in the calendar, and if you haven’t experienced it yet, you’ll soon understand why! As soon as this finishes it’s off to the Royal Court Theatre for the second and final Fab Faux Extravaganza. Tonight the finale will be all Beatles and as previously stated, it is guaranteed to be a highlight of the whole week. And yeah, you guessed it, then it’s off to the Adelphi Hotel again for Ringo’s Bus Pass Party – can you believe Ringo is now an OAP? We will celebrate his 65th birthday (a little late) with a huge party and featuring some of the best party bands around. The Overtures, The Repeatles (Sweden), Ringer and The Tearaways from the USA.What a way to end an unbelievable day!
TUESDAY
30 AUG
A lie-in is allowed but don’t forget to get over to the Cavern Club and Pub for the final onslaught. This year’s theme is ‘Lennon Remembered’. Can it really be 25 years since we lost John? I cannot think of a more fitting tribute to him than to finish off the week with a Concert of his best loved music at the Cavern Club. Johnny Silver from Germany, Olle Nilsonn, Sweden, and Liverpool’s own Jon Keats will each highlight a particular period of John’s music. It will be emotionally charged as we all remember John, a much missed man. Of course while this show is in full swing, the Cavern Pub and the front of the Cavern will be shaking with the sounds of the best live Beatle music in the world. What a week, I’m shattered just writing about it. If you’ve read this and always wanted to do this – do it! Pick up the phone and book now. You won’t be disappointed. Satisfaction guaranteed.
