A Day In The Life by the Beatles has been voted the best British song of all time by Q magazine.
The track from the epoch-making Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band came in ahead of classics including Waterloo Sunset, and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Q described A Day In The Life as "the ultimate sonic rendition of what it means to be British", adding that it “revolutionised British pop at a stroke”.
The famous lyrics, including a line about “4,000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire”, were inspired by a copy of the Daily Mail which was on John Lennon’s piano as he wrote the track.
Second on the list was The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset, followed by Oasis’ lyrically-obscure Wonderwall.
The top five was rounded off by the Sex Pistol’s banned God Save The Queen and Queen’s double No. 1 Bohemian Rhapsody.
