A new DVD featuring live performances of the Beatles playing at seven Southport venues has been released. The Beatles Merseyside double DVD set by Artsmagic is introduced by Radio Merseyside presenter, Spencer Leigh. At the time, Champion reporter Ron Ellis was running an agency for Merseybeat groups and he joins Spencer on film as they visit The Floral Hall where the group topped a Rock'n'Trad Spectacular bill in February 1962 over Gerry & The Pacemakers, Rory Storm & The Hurricanes and The Chris Hamilton Jazzmen. Ron and Spencer look round The Queens Hotel, The Kingsway Club, The Arts Centre (ex Cambridge Hall), The Little Theatre and the ATS Club in Upper Aughton Road as well as searching for The Glenpark Club in Lord Street, a popular Sunday afternoon venue at the time that has long since disappeared. On the way they find out more about the background to the gigs. Later, Spencer meets up with Sir Ron Watson, an ardent Beatles fan who was a regular at Liverpool’s Cavern Club in its heyday. Priced at £15, it is available now at Broadhursts in Market Street, Southport, and Pritchards Bookshop, Brows Lane, Formby where Spencer Leigh’s history of Merseybeat, ‘Twist & Shout’ is also on sale. www.champnews.com/html/newsstory.asp?id=7135
