Friday 10th July 2009, which has now been rechristened as Beatles Day, is 24 hours when people will show their love for the Fab Four and raise money for local and national charities through the newly formed Beatles Day Foundation.
Beatles Day is intended to be a celebration of Liverpool; its humour, the Beatles and their legacy. A day on which people will buy and wear mop-tops for charity in much the same way as they wear red noses for Comic Relief!
As well as raising money, the main focus of Beatles Day is FUN. The Beatles Day Foundation propose to turn Liverpool into a sort of Beatles Themed 'Disneyland' during the day, with the spectacular climax being The Beatles Day Concert at the Summer Pops, Liverpool Echo Arena, hosted by Ricky Tomlinson in the evening.
The Beatles Day Foundation have arranged discount travel arrangements into the city through public transport operators for those participating in Beatles Day to ensure as large an attendance as possible.
Proposals for this year's events include:
Beatles on the Ferry - Ferry across the Mersey with the Beatles.
Beatles Bus - A double decker bus with a Beatles band playing live on top which will tour round and play at the city's schools from 7th—10th July ending up in a concert at Williamson Square on 10th July.
Beatles and Fun at Liverpool One - Stages at 3 designated sites including Chavasse park with bands playing Beatles music and children's entertainment at various intervals including a parade around the shopping centre. Beatles puppets, balloons and street entertainers will be wandering around the whole site.
Beatles Day Fun Run around the Arena - organized by Run Liverpool.
Beatles Day at the Cavern and Hard Day's Night Hotel - The Cavern and the Hotel will hold their own events with profits going to Beatles Day as last year.
Beatles Story - Possible special event and discount organized by the Beatles Story themselves.
Hard Day's Night - Possible screening of the film at the Odeon to commemorate the anniversary of the premiere of its showing at the Odeon in Liverpool.
Beatles at the Town Hall - A re-creation of the famous photo of the Beatles with the Lord mayor after their triumphant return from the U.S. The 10th July is the anniversary of this date.
Beatles on the Roof - Beatles bands performing on various roofs across the city re-creating The Beatles' famous Savile Row stunt.
Twist and Shout - Dance students performing in the city centre to Beatles music.
Beatles Street Entertainers - Street entertainers performing at newly designated sites throughout the city including Church Street, Bold St and Williamson Square. The city will also be dressed with Beatles Day Banners.
Beatles Day Concert - The climax of the day with a host of stars performing Beatles songs at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
The inaugural Beatles Day was a resounding success. It was a fun filled day for audiences, tourists and performers alike. The day started with a live broadcast from the Beatles on the Ferry to GMTV and there was a major TV, press and radio coverage throughout the day, even making the news in China, Russia and New Zealand.
Celebrities and general public showed their amazing sense of fun and willingness to join in with the mop-top wearing in the name of charity. Even the guys from Westlife wore their mop-tops with pride!
We would love you to show your support and help raise money for the Imagine Appeal For Alder Hey Children's Hospital and The Marina Dalglish Appeal for a radiotherapy centre in the Liverpool Area. Let's all work together to make this a really positive day.
Phil Redmond at the Culture Company, said:
"Liverpool and The Beatles are inseparable. Liverpool made the Beatles what they were and their immortal heritage has come to play a huge role in the way the city is viewed around the world today. I would love people to come to view Beatles Day as a landmark on the calendar in years to come."
